The Bad Boy Running Podcast

Running is great, so why aren't the podcasts? Bad Boy Running is a podcast for runners who are bored of the dull and dry podcasts currently on offer. Hosted by friends Jody Raynsford and David Hellard, both running journalists, bloggers and lovable idiots, the show features the conversations they'd have in the pub focusing as much on the camaraderie and social side of the sport as the technical.

Today's podcast is filled with stories from epic ultrarunner Susie Chan!

She tells us plenty of running stories involving jungles, deserts, long long times and long long distances. Susie also gives us an insight into her running goals and races over the next few months.

Unfortunately, nobody briefed Susie before the interview so she's caught a little off guard by David asking if she would ever 'run with a Camel-Tow' but thankfully, all is explained.

Join the conversation on Facebook! This is an absolute must. Simply search Bad Boy Running Podcast Group on Facebook and there you can request to join the group. Hello Do-Badders!

On today's Podcast Jody and David will open in a way which sounds on topic and then veer wildly, wildly off course for the first part discussing some very important questions.

Let's just say if you want to know what 'Peeping Mo' is a new slang term for then the intro to this Podcast will be exceptionally important to you.

The discussion then falls quickly onto David's Beerathon where they tease potential new additions before falling back on topic with David's Man vs Lake's course review.

How to deal with downhill sections of a course provides an unusually useful element to this podcast until they stumble upon some more Strava segment revelations, urging Do-Badders to do the same.

Also in this Podcast they respond to a letter! Sent to letters@badboyrunning.com

Hello Do-Badders!

Today Jody and David are joined by Robbie Britton, the UK's top 24 hour racer and decorated ultrarunner (yes, that's right, even more decorated than Jody AND David).

In this podcast they talk a little bit about Robbie's achievements, but they also ask his opinion on whether cheating is ever acceptable.

Also keep your ears peeled for the story that David tells about a recent training experience in another country.

It's.. well.. let's just say it's one to listen out for.

Hello Do-Badders!

In this week's episode we catch up with the guys and what they've been up to.

There's lots of discussion about Doug the Beard which mainly focuses on his Beard but does sometimes stray onto his offer of a race for Jody.

A majority of this episode centres around David giving Jody advice for Jody's first Obstacle Course race. That obstacle course race is unlikely to be a Tough Mudder or Spartan but it could be anything from a Dirty Dozen to Judgement Day to Survival of the Fittest to Wolf Run to a Nuts Challenge. Maybe. Could be anything.

Anyway, after giving some genuinely useful advice the guys turn their attention to apologies for factual errors and apologies for past Strava accidental racism which David has since effectively rebranded to an incredible name.

We hear from Jody's wife, Libby, about her recent running adventures.

There's news of a free entry for a Do-Badder place for the Red Bull Steeple Chase!

Simply join the Bad Boy Running Podcast Facebook Group and suggest what you would do at the event which would make your race spectacularly Bad Boy.

Welcome back Do-badders! This week’s episode is an array of things but the main point for discussion will be the Beer Lovers' Marathon.

The guys start by calling for ideas for an innovative new theme song. Things then move on to talk of a t-shirt update, a request for race calendar suggestions, and David's rather short list of 'sponsors'.

The rest of the Podcast obviously includes vivid descriptions of the Beer Lovers' Marathon highlights such as David's unusually slow race time and over-indulgence (if there is such a thing) of Belgian's finest brews.

In today’s episode the Bad Boy Runners do something decidedly Un-Do-Baddery and discuss David's dominance of the entire MdS. We'll get an insight into how David overcame every sizeable obstacle the deserts threw at him, fighting every challenge, both mental and physical to become this year's First (*cough* British *cough*) Male Finisher.

Welcome Do-badders! This week’s episode is all about KIT! Well. Actually Jody and David do get rather sidetracked. So you could say most of it is about kit. Definitely over 40% anyway…

Coming up!

  • Buffs cause a division in opinion
  • Watches are seen as a must by David
  • Shorts are seen as optional by David
  • Gel packs are portrayed as both a hinderance and a help
  • David reveals how a Dry Robe is not only a great piece of running kit, but also an incredible social tool
  • Jody is reminded of his commitment to the 2017 Winter Nuts Challenge
  • David announces his new (but old) product - the Camel Tow

Once you’re done listening, be sure to join the conversation on the Bad Boy Running Facebook Group where hopefully you can help David completely restructure his business model! If you can't do that then definitely post about:

  1. Your key bits of kit
  2. Your most spectacular kit malfunctions
  3. Kit that you want and need
  4. Kit that doesn't exist

In today’s episode the Bad Boy Runners stray into a new realm of Podcasting by giving actual genuine advice for anyone thinking about doing the Marathon des Sables, and the usual off-topic asides for anyone who isn’t thinking about running it.

  • David begins by pitching other podcasts to Jody
  • A new member of the team is introduced
  • There’s more quality MILF banter to be had (amongst other things)
  • We learn why Jody’s hip has ruined his reputation in the eyes of his family
  • David talks us through why Caesar and Primavera Salads are going to be his go to fuel
  • Jody tries to pry David’s race number out of him so we can overwhelm him with anonymous abuse
  • They discuss some delightful toe nail stories (don’t listen whilst eating)
  • David pitches a new method for recovery for professional athletes (although don’t expect to see this at the next olympics)
  • Jody tells David exactly why his tent mates will finish the week hating him.
  • If you want to know what WWAPD stands for then you’ll want to listen to the end

Once you’re done listening, be sure to join the conversation on the Bad Boy Running Facebook Group where hopefully you can help David find Pato Banton’s contact details or nominate somebody for Bad Boy of the Month.

If you have any further MdS advice then be sure to post it in the group and get involved!

Part 2 of the charity episode and this one gets controversial.

The guys discuss all things charity related when it comes to running, including what to look for in a good charity, why charities are so picky when it comes to runners and the sinister side of what happens when you don't raise enough cash.

David explains his theory on the effect of celebrities on charity fundraising and the long-term damage of The Eddie Izzard Effect

Jody reveals exactly what makes a good charity and why he'll never run as a rhino

Part 1 of the Charity episode, all about the things we do raise cash for good (and not so good) causes.

In this episode, the chaps talk charity and David specifically discusses his latest challenge to raise money for Street Child... running the Under Round and trying to beat the record for the fastest time.

Jody admits to no running, no records and no money raised for anything.

The episode continues with more chat and feedback from Bad Boy Running listeners...

... plus there's some actual running talk (buried at around the 37 minute mark, we believe).

Here's the order of service:

  • Jody and David try to work out the heaviest person in the world
  • They guys decide a new Bad Boy challenge that involves putting ON weight
  • The boys compare images of the fattest people in Britain and then present a new challenge to BBR listeners
  • … and then some bad maths
  • Another call out for sponsors (and this is a real half-hearted attempt)
  • The attention turns to the Color Obstacle Rush UK
  • A discussion of the anger about BBR’s lack of awards nominations
  • Why Tyson Fury would LOVE Edinburgh Marathon
  • Some seriously good Bad Boy performances are revealed… and why David and Jody’s advice WORKS
  • Jody reveals that David has a stalker
  • David argues he doesn’t have serious job titles… and reveals how he manages to spend his time
  • David inadvertently reveals the nickname of his ex-girlfriend… and gets all cryptic (answers on a postcard please) as he goes off on a story about he met her
  • One listener’s attempts at match making with David… and David reveals he’s off the market (allegedly)
  • David reveals his worries about jinxing the relationship by mentioning her in the podcast… oh.
  • The guys reveal what they do on Valentine’s Day… (not with each other, of course)
  • Officially the WORST segue EVER
  • Letters from international Bad Boy Running listeners
  • A call out to US runners as Jody and David make an unashamed play to win over the US running market
  • David tries another Pato Banton impression…
  • A reader question about pacing leaves the guys confused about a race’s pacing strategy… and then fail to work it out
  • A warning about pacers… and why you shouldn’t always trust them (and a clearly made-up stat from David)
  • How to seriously p*** off a Park Run
  • The rise of BBR’s resident veterinary expert
  • A call out for technical experts to edit Bad Boy Running
